Fake Scenarios In My Head #33
“Casey?” Alex stood at the foot of the bed, arms crossed, glaring at the pile of blankets and pillows where her girlfriend had buried herself. Only a tuft of red hair was visible, poking out from beneath the blankets. The pile shifted slightly, a clear sign that Casey was awake—and had heard her.
“Care to explain how The Decisive Moment ended up sandwiched between The New York State Constitution and The Turn of the Screw?”
A hand waved sleepily from under the blankets, aiming in Alex’s direction. “Hmm?” Casey’s groggy voice murmured, still thick with sleep. She peeked out, squinting at the bright light as she tried to focus on Alex.
Alex's voice was sharp. “It seems a little goblin broke into our apartment last night and completely rearranged my bookshelves.” Her tone held a slight accusation. “Or is there another explanation for the mess I found this morning?”
Casey blinked again, stifling a yawn as Alex’s words registered. A sheepish, crooked smile crept across her face. “Um…” She scratched the back of her neck, clearly searching for an excuse. “I... couldn’t sleep. Court was brutal yesterday, and I just... wanted to unwind.”
Alex arched an eyebrow. “And you thought dismantling my entire system was a good way to unwind?”
“Well...” Casey hesitated. “I thought a little... organizing might help clear my head.” She gave Alex her most hopeful smile, but it didn’t budge her.
“‘Organizing’ is a strong word for what you did,” Alex shot back. “I have a system, Casey. I love my system. It took me years to perfect that bookshelf.”
“I know, but... come on, color-coding isn’t that bad, is it?” Casey ventured, biting her lip, half-amused but trying to soften Alex’s annoyance.
Alex huffed and crossed her arms more tightly. “Casey, it looks like a rainbow exploded all over my shelves. And... poetry in the history section? Really?”
Casey stifled a laugh, trying to keep a straight face. “Yeah, okay, maybe not my brightest idea.”
“You don’t say,” Alex replied, her voice dry, but a small smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.
Sitting up fully now, Casey reached for Alex’s hand. After a moment’s hesitation, Alex let her take it. Casey looked up with wide, pleading eyes—eyes that had softened many an argument between them.
“I’m sorry! I’ll make it up to you, I swear,” Casey promised, tracing slow circles on Alex’s knuckles.
Alex softened, though her expression stayed firm. “And what do you suggest?”
“A luxury breakfast. My treat. Whatever you like,” Casey grinned, pulling Alex a little closer.
“…and?” Alex’s voice held just a hint of curiosity.
Casey’s grin turned mischievous as she pulled Alex even closer, her arms slipping around Alex’s waist. “And maybe a special breakfast before we head out?” Her hands slid under Alex’s shirt, fingertips grazing her warm skin, making her shiver.
Alex’s resolve wavered, her cool composure slipping under Casey’s touch. “I could… be persuaded,” she murmured, her voice softening.
Casey knew she had Alex. With a triumphant smile, she pulled her down into the blankets. Her lips found Alex’s jawline, trailing warm kisses that chased away the last of Alex’s irritation.
“I can’t stay mad at you, can I?” Alex murmured, her voice softening under Casey’s touch. Casey chuckled, well aware of the effect she had on her.
“Wouldn’t be wise to try,” Casey whispered with a playful grin. She kissed Alex deeply, her hands moving purposefully, each caress making Alex gasp, her body relaxing with every kiss. The argument faded into the background as Alex’s tension melted away. Soon, she lay limp and satisfied in Casey’s arms, a content smile on her lips.
As Casey began to drift back to sleep, Alex’s voice broke the silence, teasing but gentle. “Still waiting on that breakfast... and I hope you saved some energy.”
Casey cracked an eye open, a smile tugging at her lips. “For breakfast?”
Alex grinned. “For putting every one of those books back where they belong.”

Right now you can download my book for (and I cannot stress this enough) FREE
Tumblr media
Leave one word. Leave two words. Leave a sentence maybe. That's all. You get 51,000 beautiful words for free.
But what, pray tell, is the book about? I will tell you so you don't even have to click on the above link (but it's there too as well).
Orrinir Relickim received an unusual wedding present from his husband, Uileac Korviridi: Bannain, a disobedient horse who seems determined to end his marriage. With a single kick to the chest, Uileac is out of commission from work at the War Academy, where both men serve as soldiers. Worse still, the entire country is preparing for Feast of the Horse, meant to reflect their country's rich nomadic heritage. Visitors are surging into the capital city and its suburb from all across the realm, where festivities will highlight both the army's strength and the beauty of High Poetry, their native magic system. Uileac was poised to perform dramatic feats of archery while Orrinir marched with the infantry, tasks now impossible given his serious injury. Both are forced to focus on the archer's precarious health - and on the unpleasant facets of their relationship neither wish to consider. This second installation in the 10-part Eirenic Verses series delves deeper into the country of Breme, whose existence hinges upon power-infused poetry. Featuring a greater focus on both the characters and the world they live in, Pride Before a Fall will delight readers of 9 Years Yearning, who have come to love Orrinir, Uileac, and their friends. Luscious prose will whisk you away into a realm melding realism and fantasy for a unique reading experience.
There is no catch. There is no cost. There is just Book. For. Free.

my hot take as a person with an english degree and a library degree is that some of the dorkiest fiction and poetry ever committed to paper in the english language came out of the iowa writer's workshop so it is at best goofy and at worst completely futile to argue that your average amazon unlimited writer is having a more deleterious effect on literacy and literature.
#like i know these guys and they are NOT better than booktokers bc they have an mfa in fiction or poetry#in fact. (further hot take) i'd argue many of them are orders of magnitude worse bc they take themselves and their ✨ craft ✨ so seriously#that their work is completely devoid of any authentic human emotion and is merely detached irony trying to mask as social commentary#but the booktok girlies know what they're doing. they're aware! and they're having a great time doing it! they're having fun!#and i have read unfortunately MANY works by mfas that are just like. where is the joy in this? the fear? the sorrow? the honesty???#like yeah booktok is not my thing and it can be pretty silly but most of them aware of the genre they're in and they're having a blast#i've read poetry and fiction by mfas that are grasping so hard to make a Point that they just completely lack genuine and honest emotion#and you can tell the writer just like. did not feel anything urgent or vital about the work they were creating#anyway. follow for more hot takes on the literary establishment#books books books#saying all that i know there is a whole ecosystem of amazon unlimited and booktok writers who are in it strictly for the money#and maybe feel nothing about what they're writing. but they ARE aware of the genre they're in#and to really make it work in amazon unlimited you DO have to have your finger on the pulse of craft wrt genre fiction#whereas i one time in college hateread all of a quote unquote literary writer's works and it was just like#oh you have NO idea that you're just writing complete nonsense#you think you're making a point and have social commentary and every single book is just. incredibly silly#and you would have had a much better and more interesting time if you allowed yourself to write romance novels instead!!

sas rh: let eoin survive the fall au » a tale of two lieutenants (part two)
#sas rogue heroes#sasrh:canonau#turns out augustin cannot for the life of him figure the irish lieutenant out#and he makes him oh so very curious#actually both irishmen kinda do#especially when they're together#but whereas paddy remains pretty set in letting augustin see just one side of him#(and maybe just a glimpse of something else when he lets his guard down with eoin and doesn't realise the french is looking)#eoin seems to do the opposite and it's like he enjoys showing he contains multitudes every single time both lieutenants have an interaction#and just when jordan thinks he's finally understood who's this young talented soldier#BAM something else pops up#he's not just paddy's number one defender#he's also pretty good at leading a drill and training??#he's joyful and kind to others (english and french - he makes no difference)#he's a talented pianist ?? certainly catching augustin's attention when he gives paddy lessons in the mess hall#(lessons which he tries not to stare at for they feel a bit private)#he's skilled not just with weapons and strategy but also with the pen ?? with words ??#if the letters he's seen him ghost write are anything to go by#but oh then he starts making off handed comments about poetry#about books#about books augustin is reading in those small moments of quiet in between the raids and the battles#and he's *stubborn* - augustin figures out when comments turn into conversations turn into exchanges and into debates#and he *likes* debating - they have that in common#tbh neither of them back down from their own stances and augustin would say theres never someone who comes on top#until one time when augustin is quite sure he's got this one#but then eoin mcgonigal just delivers one final blow in perfect french that leaves him just ?????¿¿¿¿¿???#and he's a bit speechless#and eoin just smiles his usual smile and stretches and leaves like it's nothing and MON DIEU does he make augustin OH so curious#and that's the only reason he stares#NYWAY this is super self indulgent id say more but tag limit POINT IS love em they shouldve met paddy has 2 hands (as do they)

hang on, this was a very out of pocket thought I had in like, tags on a thing, but fuck, it's actually very sweet to think about the PC early on in their relationship picking and pressing flowers for Karlach
like as a "I saw this and thought of you, but I couldn't give it to you then, so I saved it for when you can enjoy it too"? adorable.
I'm kind of really into this idea of Mara keeping a journal in her attempts to recover her memories, and also pressing flowers between the pages. I'd have to work out the specifics of how their relationship is going to work out once I get there in act 3 (I tried not to spoil myself, but something tells me a romanced Karlach is gonna be pretty upset about Gortash greeting her lover so warmly so maybe an apology gift will be needed), but the idea of the two of them going through a book-bouquet together, almost as kind of a "the person he knew is not who I am anymore, this is who I am, this is the me who loves you" thing is really sweet
like.
"this one is from near where we first met- look, this leaf is even singed where your heat had touched it, like it touched me."
"this one is from just outside camp, and I picked it the night I told you I liked you, because I was just so happy."
"this is from near Rosymorn, when I looked at you just enjoying the breeze, and thought that you looked particularly beautiful."
"this is the prettiest flower I could find near Reithwin, and it may be a pathetic, wretched little thing, but it still grew stubbornly where it wasn't supposed to, and it reminded me of how your love took root in my heart."
"this one is my favorite color, and I wasn't sure why I thought that until I realized it's the same color as your eyes."
and so on and so on.
i'm about to chew gravel istg

obsessed with their different reactions to being called starcrossed lovers
#im gonna pretend mattie didnt die and visits them sometimes back in toronto#it's such a cute dynamic they have#the two evil (affectionate) sisters who just loving teasing laura#also one of my favourite things abt this show is the choreographing they do for the static camera#i bet it's so annoying to have to think about but i love watching them all move so coordinatedly through the frame#somehow still making it look natural#also i know laura is the storyteller one and i dont really know enough abt romanticism to make any definitive claims abt carmilla#but having scrolled her blog a bit to figure out her tastes in music and art#i wonder if theres a part of carmilla that kind of enjoys being starcrossed. or doomed in a sense#or maybe she that she wouldnt have CHOSEN this story necessarily but that she has resigned herself to it#on account of her vampire nature#and sees a certain beauty in it#that all her romances are doomed#idk. im still figuring her out#also im reinterpreting that exchange mattie and carmilla have in this scene#carmilla calls mattie a utilitarian which is probably right#mattie then callls her a nihilist and carmilla corrects that to existentialist#and mattie says absurdist at best#but those arent designations like back and forth as i had read it before#it's just carmillas philosophy theyre arguing about. i THINK. or maybe it's both of them#putting a pin in that until ive read more books#also kind of obsessed with how laura and danny and maybe the other humans are so quick to ascribe a morality to the vampires#based just on the 'shes a vampire!!' while obviously by necessity the vampires have spent wayyyyyyyyyy more time thinking abt their ethics#or maybe not by necessity for all of them but to mattie and carmilla it definitely seems like a necessity. or inevitability#they mustve spent countless hours over the centuries talking abt this if they can joke abt it in this way now#and in different states too like i can imagine distraught Im A Monster type conversations but also just sort of academic debates and also#carmilla reading some new book that has come out and mattie being like what newfangled thing are you into now#i guess utilitarianism was also newfangled at some point. theyre both older. but you know#carmilla is a poet. dont know if she writes poetry but she looks at things in a poet's way i think#also dont think shes entirely a romantic but i do think some of her tastes lean more toward the romantic

Hello, my dears. Has anyone else been entirely losing their sense of self again? I don't think I've ever truly known who I am in my entirety, but recently, I have been experiencing frequent identity crises and I'm wondering if that is the new activity of the summer for us depressed literature, art and greek myth obsessed people or if it's simply me

I'm currently rereading This is How you Lose the Time War and man it is so good. It is so clearly such a well planed out story. The shadow is so subtle but so obvious once you know about it. Also the give and take with red and blue and the agencies are so well done. It hits this fantastic point where, yes in many ways they are polar opposites, but that only makes the similarities more blaring.

Let slaves in mind be servile to their fears;
Our heart is high instarred in brighter spheres.
Fernando, IV.ii of Love's Sacrifice (1633) by John Ford
#i almost didn't read this play#john ford#poetry#caroline drama#english literature#there are 5 ford plays in this collection i borrowed from the library#and it's a loan from another library in the state which means it can't be renewed#i had read tis pity in a book i donated to savers and then decided i wanted to read perkin warbeck by ford#and maybe some others since tis pity was just so good#the broken heart was intriguing from a quote by charles lamb in the intro#and the lover's melancholy interested me since it was a tragicomedy#so those three plays (broken heart/warbeck/melancholy) i knew i had to read#and i had half a mind like yeah if i don't have much time before the due date i might return it wo reading sacrifice#(and i also read a few other things in between ford plays to just get a breather)#love's sacrifice might be his second best after tis pity#the broken heart was really good too. warbeck was a little strange but not bad. melancholy was... i had notes#but i still really enjoyed all 3#lover's melancholy and perkin warbeck suffer in comparison with the expectations i had from shakespeare's tragicomedies and history plays#they're still very worthwhile but ford is at his best in the tragic form#i really like how he writes female characters. he also has a flair for macabre set pieces and spectacle#i would love to direct any of these plays someday#i think all the time about how id direct like a bbc television shakespeare series but for other lesserknown playwrights#i would give so much to be able to bring ford's work to a general audience today#he has so much to say and is so entertaining

@yummysuika @ospreywhite I really appreciate your translation work; can you explain more about shichen timekeeping to me? Because I know a tiny bit of modern Mandarin Chinese, but I can't recognize the shichens as the zodiac animals:
Zi (I don't know "rat", so I actually can't make any argument here.)
Chou (I don't know "ox", but I reasonably could have expected "niu" for "cow".)
Yin (I know "tiger" as "hu".)
Mao (I don't know "rabbit", but to me "mao" is "cat".)
Chen (I know "dragon" as "long".)
Si (I don't know "snake", but now I find it interesting that it sounds like death, like snakes could be seen as evil in Chinese culture similar to how they are seen in the Christian world.)
Wu (I know "horse" as "ma".)
Wei (I know "sheep/goat" as "yang".)
Shen (I don't know "monkey", but I would have expected "Sun" or "Wu" or "Kong" because of "Monkey King".)
You (I know "rooster/chicken" as " ji".)
Xu (I know "dog" as "gou".)
Hai (I don't know "pig/boar" unless "pork" and "pig" are the same "siu".)
I tried asking my parents, but they just starting talking about how the Chinese zodiac is actually a 60-year cycle with the 12 animals and the 5 elements. So are these shichen names the "Pre-Han dynasty semi-descriptive terms"? Is it kind of like the difference between "midday" and "noon" in English? The former is a "descriptor", the latter is a "name", but they "mean" the same thing?
(I tried checking the etymology for "noon" on dictionary.com, so to be fair "ninth hour" is a descriptor, but in Modern English it's not really recognizable as such and so for the sake of my shichen question, I'm calling "noon" a "name".)
Or is this another language/dialect or due to the evolution of language (changing words and pronunciations)?
I was also looking up the Dragon Boat Festival being on the unluckiest day of the year, and it says, "The Chinese name of the festival is pronounced differently in different Chinese languages. Duanwu (端午) literally means 'starting horse'—i.e., the first "horse day" of the month according to the Chinese zodiac." so I was able to get the exact character for "wu". I think it's interesting that Wikipedia says "literally ... horse" but putting 午 into Google Translate yields "midday, noonday, seventh earthly branch, 11 a.m.-1 p.m." It's unfortunate that Wikipedia only says "different Chinese languages" for "Duanwu" instead of specifying them or time periods, but I appreciate it listing different romanizations by country for Cantonese.
Would you say there's any pattern to Chinese writers or English translators using the above terms vs. using "hour/time/head/body/tail of the (insert zodiac animal here)"? Like if one sounds better for a historical fantasy setting, or choosing to use the pinyin in English instead of translating to not be translating literally? ETA: I should have gotten onto a computer sooner. I asked my parents and then you guys because searching "shichen" in Wikipedia just resulted in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_units_of_measurement. But further digging took me to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traditional_Chinese_timekeeping. I'll probably get answers there (Maybe I'll even be able to explain to my dad why he was thinking of ten stems and not matching mathematically with "60 is from 12 times 5, not 10 times 6" when he was trying to lecture on the 60-year cycle for the Chinese zodiac, lol.), so my apologies for bothering you. I'd still appreciate your thoughts on what was formerly the last paragraph about writing and translation choices!
#Chinese#Mandarin#language#writing#translation#timekeeping#shichens#Chinese zodiac#I think language is so cool and I am loving applying my interest to Chinese#Step aside English and Spanish and other Western languages#Also I am sadder for my parents that I haven't learned either of their dialects and I'm wondering about dialects dying out in China like ho#foreign languages die out in diaspora as immigrant generations increase#or like the formal eradication and reintroduction of languages like Hebrew and Welsh#Also me trying to flex my minimal Mandarin skills while reading needs to be taken with a grain of salt#I know just enough to hang myself (if even that much)#It's one thing to infer from context that a cardinal direction or number was untranslated in a name#But I was so wrong trying to figure out “Ballad of Sword and Wine” vs “Qiang Jin Jiu”#I was like I don't know “ballad” but “sing/song” is “chang/chang ge” so maybe the lower vocab word is used for multiple words and/or change#pronunciation slightly or the higher vocab word happens to be similar in pronunciation#maybe “jin” is a different spelling/pronunciation for “sword” as “jian” and of course “jiu” is “wine/alcohol”#But no when I did more digging and found fan translation notes and the Chinese characters even though the fan translation is gone#it turns out the English title is a figurative/interpretive title translation instead of a literal one#When I have the spoons I should retry finding the Chinese Wikipedia page for Li Bai's poem and plugging the poem into Google Translate#and attempting poetry analysis. I'm already having Thoughts about the title and the first book#not even the whole story#isn't available#I just love books so much and it's so cool how someone chooses the title for a story

i’ve been trying to think of ways to keep up my spanish since i moved and don’t know as many people to speak it with here; i saw you’re reading out loud in french every day how’s that going? would you recommend it to maintain fluency? :)
it's going well! it's great for maintaining vocab for sure, especially if you read recent stuff (as opposed to novels from the 1800s lol). and it's been helping a ton with my pronunciation; actually speaking the words helps with your own articulation as well as your oral comprehension to a lesser extent. i think it's a pretty good option in the absence of conversational partners, and it's really not necessary to spend a ton of time on it per day, especially if you're already fluent. you could read a chapter a day (or 10 pages, or 5 pages, or whatever) just to keep your hand in. worth a try if you have some spanish-language books available!

okay rambles but i started creatively writing in like ... 5th grade? and. oh god just a little encouragement to anyone looking to get into writing or insecure or whatnot, but HELLS, maybe it's to he expected with my (obviously) very young age and inexperience with writing then, but my writing was really. yeah. Yeah. but then i'm what... a lot older now, obviously, and my writing has gotten leagues better. i'm probably not a good example for this bcs childhood years development stuff are different etc etc BUT practicing writing more and whatnot really does go a long way :]
#⋯ ꒰ა starry thoughts ໒꒱ *·˚#my writing in 2020 is a lot different than my writing now even! especially so compared to my writing from 2010s#reading a lot of media is also really important :] i always read a lot of books BUT i only started to really read poetry since the pandemic#which were uh basically my early teenage years so idk if i'm a good example for this bcs childhood brain development and stuff (???)#BUT STILL ..... playing games like ffxiv and being really invested in the lore and writing + reading more poems and being fascinated with#more authors and pieces of literature + expanding my general vocabulary knowledge whatnot ... it all really goes a long way!#oh man i'm pretty proud of myself actually. i do love my writing. as imperfect (as all things are) it is.#i had a lot of Pauses with writing throughout my uhh relatively short life thus far since i'm NOT yet an adult and all aha but yeah!#so bless ffxiv again for bringing back my writing spirit... and other medias and whatever <3#rn i have to thank bg3 for bringing back my Creative Spirit bcs i've been writing a lot more again and having/working on my creative ideas!!#okay i just wanted to ramble a bit lol ^_^ there!#idk my being a writer is very important to me. and my journey as one too.#i want to make a book one day! most feasibly would be to make a collection of short stories :] a bit similar to 'm is for magic' maybe bcs#i grew up with that lol neil gaiman i adore you <3#i have a very special original world in my head but i am a little selfish and want to keep them all to myself... oops. or who knows!#anyway i have a lot of ideas and i adore writing and literature sooo much <3#anyway. okay. leaving it here.#cheering on every writer author whatever out there !!! unless you're a sucky person of course yuck bigots but yeah ^^ <3#huge writing inspo for me is uhhhhhhhh. thinking#ffxiv! does ffxiv count. esp drk quests. and shb as a whole. and then... edgar allan poe? neil gaiman? yeah?#can't remember anyone else good gods but i love vivid and imaginative storytelling and writing descriptively :] a bit of prose but also#quite simple in its eloquence (???) unsure honestly oh gods anyway BYE rambles over apollo signing off beep boop AGHHHHH (screams)
